Every once in a while, a message comes in that makes my whole week. This one came from Tyler. He was planning a gift for his wife’s upcoming birthday.
His wife, Meag, had been following me on Instagram. Tyler noticed. So instead of another gift that would end up in a drawer, he reached out to me directly and asked if we could set up a family session as a surprise for her birthday.

A Gift That Never Expires
We met up shortly after Meag’s birthday for the session itself, and this is a hill I will die on – a photo session as a gift is the absolute best gift you can give. No giant box to unwrap, nothing that sits unused after the excitement wears off. A little gift certificate in an envelope. Just an invitation for afternoon outside, together, being fully present with each other.
That’s the thing about photos: they don’t go out of style, they don’t need batteries, and they only become more valuable with time. Ten years from now, this won’t be “the year we got a new gadget.” It’ll be the year Dad surprised Mom with a whole afternoon frozen in time.
An Afternoon of Golden Light and Giggles
The girls had an absolute blast. We ran around Josette’s fields, I showed them the old hollowed-out log that my own kids are obsessed with and they climbed right in without hesitation. They wandered through the tall grass in matching yellow dresses as the light turned gold. There were forehead-to-forehead giggling fits, flower bouquets, piggyback energy, and not a single posed, stiff moment in the bunch.
Honestly, I had just as much fun as they did. Sessions like this remind me why I love this work — not the poses, not the perfect light (though that helps), but the real, unscripted moments that happen when a family is just enjoying being together. And the click when you meet a family that you know you’ll be photographing again and again. These kiddos did such a great job enjoying their time together and being themselves
